How does a vintage define your Bordeaux?
A vintage wine is one made from grapes that were all, or primarily, grown and harvested in a single specified year. The term "vintage" itself was first used in the early 15th century, adapted from the Old French "vendange", meaning 'wine harvest'. For wine produced in regions at the colder climatic limits of wine production, vintage can be very important. Some seasons will be much warmer and produce riper grapes and better wine. Most countries allow a vintage wine to include a portion of wine not from the year denoted on the label. In the European Union, the requirement is 85% same-year content for vintage-dated wine. In the United States this requirement is also 85%. A wine carrying an AVA designation must reach 95%. The opposite of a vintage wine is a nonvintage wine, often a blend from the produce of two or more years. That is a common practice for winemakers seeking a consistent style.
Does a vintage report accurately predict quality?
The importance assigned to vintage is both varied and disputed. Some wine writers express skepticism about the absolute reliability of vintage charts. Frank J. Prial, a New York Times wine columnist, declared the vintage chart to be "dead," stating that "winemakers of the world have rendered the vintage chart obsolete,". Bill Marsano further wrote that "winemakers now have the technology and skills to make good and even very good wines in undistinguished years." James Laube of Wine Spectator asserted that "even an average vintage can yield some grand wines."
Roman Weil is co-chairman of the Oenonomy Society of the US and a professor at the University of Chicago. He tested the hypothesis that experienced wine drinkers "cannot distinguish in blind tastings the wine of years rated high from those of years rated low, or, if they can, they do not agree with the vintage chart's preferences,". Weil's study used wines ranging from four to 17 years beyond their vintage with 240 wine drinkers. He found that tasters could not distinguish between wines of good and bad vintages except for Bordeaux wines. Even when a distinction could be made, the match between the tasters' individual assessments and the charts' rankings was little better than tossing a coin. When the tests were replicated with wine experts, including French wine academics, the results were again the same as chance.
Despite these findings, Weil does not consider a vintage chart to be useless. He suggests using one to help "find good buys in wine," as wine made in years considered to be worse than average for vintages may be priced far below its actual quality. This aligns with a common Bordelais saying: "The best vintage is the vintage we have to sell," as cited by Joshua Greene in Wine & Spirits.

What are the ideal storage conditions for long-term holding?
Proper storage is crucial for preserving the quality of your Bordeaux over time. The AWRI Technical Note TN09 provides guidance on the effects of heat and light on wine during storage.
Temperature: Excessive storage temperatures significantly affect the shelf life of bottled wine. Marais (1986) observed the development of faulty flavors and decreasing overall quality after 12 months of storage at 30°C. Temperatures exceeding 40°C will induce visual and sensory changes to a wine in only a matter of days, according to Ough (1986). In general, any storage place where the temperature exceeds 25°C for long periods and 40°C for short periods can affect wine quality, Ough (1992) states. Light: Light can have deleterious effects on wine flavor. Maujean and Seguin (1983) demonstrated that 'lightstruck' flavor (goûts de lumière) is due to the formation of volatile sulfur compounds. Dozon and Noble (1989) found that exposure of still and sparkling white wines in green glass to fluorescent lamps resulted in lightstruck flavor after 31.1 hours and 18 hours, respectively. In clear glass, this occurred after only 3.3 hours and 3.4 hours. Direct sunlight provides 4286 times the amount of UV-A radiation as a 36W fluorescent lamp, according to Gordon Watson. It is likely more deleterious to wine quality than electric lighting systems. Rankine (1989) indicates that amber glass is most effective in excluding wavelengths below about 450 nm. The Institute's investigations have identified a disproportionately high number of copper instability cases in white wines stored in clear glass bottles. Those cases result in haze.

Bordeaux wines typically spend a period in 225-litre oak barriques, commonly a year. Bottling and further aging follow before release. Vintage Port, in contrast, spends a maximum of two and a half years in barrels or stainless steel before bottling. It is then designed to age another 10 to 40+ years in the bottle.
